As of 2 April 2012, laser pointers with a power output of greater than 1 milliwatt (1mw) will be restricted items requiring reasonable excuse for lawful possession thereof.
‘Reasonable excuse’ for possession of a laser pointer includes: Firearms Licence holders.
“The person holds a licence that authorises possession of a firearm in relation to which the laser pointer may be used, and the laser pointer has a power output of less than 10 milliwatts.” (10mw)
Long story short - if you’ve got any kind of weapons licence in Queensland, you can get a laser pointer/targeter for your firearms which has a power of up to 10mw. This includes bore sighters, practice systems and targetting tools.
I can’t wait to be able to afford a SIRT training pistol, which will allow me to practice my holster and dry firing procedures without having to spend money on ammunition 🙂
